Review of ICANN Geographical Regions

 

The Fifth roundtable discussion on the subject of “Review of ICANN Geographical Regions”, was held on October 9, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Department of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India, New Delhi – 110003. This fifth edition of the roundtable conference was primarily focused on the Final Report prepared by the Geographic Regions Review Working Group. ICANN geographic regions are currently defined according to the United Nations Statistics Division’s existing classification. The discussion in this roundtable was on the idea of bringing out an output which can be utilized to promote and increase India’s participation to develop an alternate standard for geographic categorization which would meet ICANN’s commitment to geographic diversity and to form Geographic Regions Report of ICANN. A Final Report of Geographic Regions Review Working Group was shared with the participants as the Report made certain specific recommendations with respect to modifying the current classification of ICANN’s geographic regions and the comments were sought on the same from the relevant stakeholder groups from India, the motive of  this roundtable was also to serve as a platform to discuss Indian stakeholders submissions. Shri Sanjeev Kumar Mittal, Joint Secretary (JS), DeitY, chaired the roundtable and the discussions were moderated by Shri. Rahul Gosain, Director, DeitY. The participants of the roundtable were Registrars, Law Enforcement Agencies, Civil Society, Academia, Private sector experts as well as Government functionaries. Subsequently, the views expressed by stakeholders were assimilated into a report.
